Calculation Formula & Assumptions

Calculates the net square footage of flooring required for hardwood, laminate, engineered wood, or luxury vinyl plank (LVP), and computes carton quantities.

Total Sq Ft = (Length × Width) × (1 + Waste %)

Step-by-step breakdown:

  • Calculate room area in square feet: Area = Length × Width
  • Multiply by waste factor: Area with Waste = Area × (1 + Waste % ÷ 100)
  • Divide total area with waste by box coverage: Boxes = ⌈Area with Waste ÷ Sq Ft per Box⌉

Note: Luxury vinyl plank (LVP) typically requires 7% to 10% waste, whereas solid hardwood requires 10% to 15% due to natural grade culling.

Worked Calculation Example

Living Room (14×20 ft) Laminate Flooring

Installing click-lock laminate flooring in a 14×20 foot living room with 23.5 sq ft per box and a 10% waste factor.

Room Dimensions:14 ft × 20 ft
Waste Factor:10%
Carton Coverage:23.5 sq ft per carton
Calculation Steps:
  1. Room Area = 14 × 20 = 280.00 sq ft
  2. Area with 10% waste = 280 × 1.10 = 308.00 sq ft
  3. Cartons needed = 308 ÷ 23.5 = 13.1 => 14 cartons (329.00 sq ft total)
Order 14 cartons of laminate flooring.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Measure the longest length and width of the room.
  2. Enter dimensions in feet or meters.
  3. Set the waste allowance (8%–10% for straight LVP/laminate; 12%–15% for solid hardwood or herringbone).
  4. Optional: Enter box coverage from your chosen flooring product to determine exact carton count.
Pro Tips:
  • Acclimate solid and engineered hardwood in the room for 48 to 72 hours before installation.

Common Estimation Mistakes to Avoid

  • Not adding closets and doorways to the total room area.
  • Discarding off-cut ends that could be used to start subsequent rows.
  • Forgetting to verify subfloor levelness before ordering.

Frequently Asked Questions

Multiply room length by width to get square footage. Add 10% for waste, then divide by the square footage listed on the box and round up to the next full carton.

If your laminate or LVP does not have pre-attached acoustic padding, you must purchase roll underlayment equal to your raw room square footage.
