Calculation Formula & Assumptions

Converts room square footage into square yards (the traditional standard unit for carpet sales) and calculates carpet padding requirements.

Square Yards = (Room Length × Room Width) ÷ 9 × (1 + Waste %)

Step-by-step breakdown:

  • Calculate room area in square feet: Area = Length × Width
  • Convert to square yards: Square Yards = Square Feet ÷ 9
  • Apply waste factor (typically 10%–15% to account for 12-foot or 15-foot roll seam alignment): Area with Waste = Area × (1 + Waste % ÷ 100)
  • Calculate matching padding area in square yards.

Note: Carpet rolls come in fixed widths (usually 12 feet or 15 feet). Rooms wider than the roll width require seams, which increases cutting waste.

Worked Calculation Example

Master Bedroom (12×16 ft) Carpet Installation

Installing broadloom carpet and 8 lb padding in a 12 ft by 16 ft bedroom.

Room Dimensions:12 ft × 16 ft (192 sq ft)
Waste Factor:10%
Padding:Included
Calculation Steps:
  1. Raw Area = 12 × 16 = 192 sq ft
  2. Square Yards = 192 ÷ 9 = 21.33 sq yd
  3. With 10% waste: 192 × 1.10 = 211.20 sq ft (23.47 sq yd)
  4. Padding required = 23.47 sq yd
Order 24 square yards of broadloom carpet and 24 square yards of carpet padding.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter room length and width in feet or meters.
  2. Choose whether to include carpet padding (cushion underlayment).
  3. Adjust the waste allowance (10% for simple rooms; 15% for rooms with odd widths requiring seams).

Common Estimation Mistakes to Avoid

  • Ignoring roll width constraints (trying to cover a 13-foot room with a 12-foot roll without ordering extra for seaming).
  • Forgetting that carpet pile nap must all face the same direction in connected spaces.

Frequently Asked Questions

Historically, carpet in the US, UK, and Canada was woven on 3-foot looms and sold by the linear yard. 1 square yard equals 9 square feet (3 ft × 3 ft). Modern retailers often display prices per square foot, but roll inventory remains calculated in square yards.
