Calculate your exact project numbers with zero manual math:

The Quick Perimeter Method for Standard Rooms

For rooms where all walls share the same ceiling height, measuring each individual wall is unnecessary. Instead, measure the room perimeter: 1. Measure the length and width of the room floor. 2. Add the four sides together: (Length + Width) × 2 = Total Perimeter. 3. Multiply perimeter by ceiling height: Perimeter × Height = Gross Wall Area. 4. Subtract the square footage of doors, windows, and large built-ins.

How to Calculate Triangular Gable and Cathedral Walls

For vaulted or cathedral ceilings where walls have a peaked gable end: 1. Divide the wall into two geometric shapes: a bottom rectangle and an upper triangle. 2. Rectangle Area = Wall Width × Height to Eaves (lowest ceiling point). 3. Triangle Area = (Wall Width × Peak Height above Eaves) ÷ 2. 4. Add both areas together for the total wall square footage.

Measuring Stairwell Walls

Stairwell walls are trapezoidal. The simplest accurate measurement technique: 1. Measure the horizontal run of the stair wall. 2. Measure the vertical height at the top landing. 3. Measure the vertical height at the bottom landing. 4. Area = Horizontal Run × [(Height Top + Height Bottom) ÷ 2].

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Baseboards and crown moldings typically account for less than 3% of total wall area. It is safer to leave them in the calculation as a natural contingency cushion.

A digital laser distance measure (laser tape) is dramatically faster and more accurate than a steel tape measure, especially for ceiling heights and long room dimensions.
