Understanding Wallpaper Packaging: Single vs. Double Rolls

In North America, wallpaper pricing is frequently quoted per "single roll," but almost universally packaged and shipped in continuous "double rolls" (or bolts) to minimize cutting waste. A standard American double roll is 20.5 inches wide by 33 feet long (covering roughly 56 sq ft), while standard European metric rolls are 53 cm wide by 10.05 meters long (covering approx. 5.3 sq meters).

The Impact of Pattern Repeat

A solid or textured wallpaper with no pattern repeat has zero matching waste. However, patterned wallpapers require shifting each adjacent strip vertically until the motifs align: - **Random Match / Texture**: No pattern waste (usable coverage ≈ 85% to 90% of roll area). - **Straight Match (repeat < 12 inches)**: Budget 15% waste. - **Drop Match (repeat > 12 inches to 24 inches)**: Can consume 20% to 30% waste because up to half the pattern height is discarded at the top of every strip.

Step-by-Step Strip Calculation Method

The most reliable calculation method counts physical strips rather than simple square footage: 1. Room perimeter ÷ Roll width = Total strips required around the room. 2. Wall height + Pattern repeat + 4 inches trim margin = Cut length per strip. 3. Roll length ÷ Cut length per strip = Usable strips per roll (rounded down). 4. Total strips required ÷ Usable strips per roll = Total rolls needed (rounded up).

Frequently Asked Questions

Only subtract doors or windows if they are larger than 30 to 40 square feet (such as double French doors). For standard windows, professional paperhangers do not deduct the opening because pattern matching requires continuous full-length drops beside the casing.

Like ceramic tiles, wallpaper colors vary subtly between print runs. Ensure every roll in your shipment bears the identical batch or run number.
