Gravel Driveway Anatomy: The Three-Layer System

A durable gravel driveway is not simply 4 inches of decorative rock poured over soil. A proper driveway consists of three distinct layers: 1. **Sub-base Layer**: 4 to 6 inches of large, angular crushed rock (#3 or #4 crushed stone, 1.5 to 2.5 inches in size) that interlocks to distribute vehicle weight. 2. **Middle Base Layer**: 3 to 4 inches of dense grade aggregate (such as Crusher Run or #57 stone with stone dust) to fill voids. 3. **Surface Wearing Course**: 2 to 3 inches of smaller decorative stone (#411 gravel, pea gravel, or crushed granite) shaped with a 2% center crown for water runoff.

The Volume and Weight Formulas

Quarries sell bulk gravel by the **ton**, but you calculate your space in **cubic yards** or **cubic meters**: **Cubic Yards** = (Length in ft × Width in ft × Depth in inches) ÷ 324 *(Note: 324 comes from 12 inches per foot × 27 cubic feet per cubic yard)* **Tons of Gravel** = Cubic Yards × Compaction Factor (1.10) × Density (approx. 1.4 tons per cubic yard) As a quick rule of thumb for standard crushed stone, 1 cubic yard weighs approximately 2,800 lbs (1.4 US tons) to 3,000 lbs (1.5 tons) depending on moisture and mineral composition.

Compaction Factor: The Hidden 10% to 15%

When angular crushed gravel is spread and compacted with a vibratory roller or vehicle traffic, the air pockets collapse. If you order only the exact loose volume, your finished depth will be 10% to 15% thinner than planned. Always add a 10% waste and compaction buffer to your order.

Worked Example: 50-Foot Residential Driveway

Calculating gravel for a new 50 ft long by 10 ft wide driveway with a 3-inch top dressing layer: 1. Dimensions: 50 ft × 10 ft = 500 sq ft surface area 2. Depth: 3 inches (0.25 ft) 3. Loose Volume: (500 × 3) ÷ 324 = 4.63 cubic yards 4. With 10% compaction & waste: 4.63 × 1.10 = 5.09 cubic yards 5. Weight in Tons: 5.09 × 1.4 = 7.13 tons Order recommendation: 7.5 to 8 tons of crushed gravel delivered by a tandem dump truck.

Frequently Asked Questions

For a brand new driveway over native soil, the total profile should be 8 to 12 inches thick across three layers. For resurfacing an existing, settled gravel driveway, a 2 to 3-inch top dressing is standard.

A standard single-axle dump truck typically hauls 5 to 7 tons. A tandem axle dump truck carries 12 to 16 tons, and a tri-axle truck can deliver 18 to 22 tons per load.

Pea gravel consists of rounded, smooth river stones. Under vehicle tires, smooth stones roll and shift like ball bearings rather than interlocking, creating ruts and making snow removal difficult. Use angular crushed stone (such as #57 or crusher run) instead.
