Mulch Calculator

Calculate mulch volume in cubic yards or bags for garden beds, around trees, and landscaping areas.

Garden Bed Dimensions

3 inches recommended for weed control.

Mulch Volume & Bag Counts

Total Mulch Volume in Cubic Yards

1.48cu yd

2 Cubic Foot Retail Bags

20bags
Detailed Material Breakdown
3 Cubic Foot Retail Bags
14bags
Volume in Cubic Meters
1.13m³
Total Bed Square Footage
160 sq ft

Calculation Formula & Assumptions

Calculates the volume of wood or bark mulch in cubic yards and converts to retail bag counts (2 cu ft and 3 cu ft bags).

Cubic Yards = (Square Feet × Depth in Inches) ÷ 324

Step-by-step breakdown:

  • Area in square feet = Bed Length × Bed Width
  • Cubic Yards = (Area × Depth in Inches) ÷ 324
  • Bags (2 cu ft) = ⌈Cubic Feet ÷ 2⌉
  • Bags (3 cu ft) = ⌈Cubic Feet ÷ 3⌉

Note: 1 cubic yard covers 324 sq ft at 1" deep, 162 sq ft at 2" deep, or 108 sq ft at 3" deep.

Worked Calculation Example

Flower Bed Mulching (4×40 ft, 3 inches deep)

Mulching a perimeter garden bed 40 ft long and 4 ft wide with cedar mulch.

Bed Area:4 ft × 40 ft = 160 sq ft
Depth:3 inches
Calculation Steps:
  1. Cubic Yards = (160 × 3) ÷ 324 = 1.48 cu yd
  2. Cubic Feet = 1.48 × 27 = 40 cu ft
  3. 2 cu ft Bags = 40 ÷ 2 = 20 bags
  4. 3 cu ft Bags = 40 ÷ 3 = 13.3 => 14 bags
Purchase 20 two-cubic-foot bags, or 1.5 cubic yards in bulk.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter garden bed dimensions.
  2. Select depth (3 inches for new beds, 1–2 inches for annual top-dressing).

Common Estimation Mistakes to Avoid

  • Building "mulch volcanoes" piled against tree trunks, which suffocates the root collar.
  • Applying mulch deeper than 4 inches, which prevents water from reaching plant roots.

Frequently Asked Questions

3 inches is the optimal depth for weed suppression and moisture retention in new beds. For annual refreshes, apply 1 to 2 inches.
