Calculation Formula & Assumptions

Calculates the number of standard, modular, or custom bricks needed for a wall, patio, or walkway based on face dimensions and mortar joint thickness.

Bricks = ⌈Wall Area × Bricks Per Sq Ft × (1 + Waste %)⌉

Step-by-step breakdown:

  • Wall Area = Length × Height
  • Effective Brick Area = (Brick Length + Mortar Joint) × (Brick Height + Mortar Joint)
  • Bricks per Sq Ft = 144 sq in ÷ Effective Brick Area in sq in
  • Raw Bricks = Wall Area × Bricks per Sq Ft
  • Add waste allowance (typically 5%–10% for cuts and transit breakage).

Note: Standard US modular brick with 3/8" mortar joints requires approximately 6.85 bricks per square foot of single-wythe wall surface.

Worked Calculation Example

Garden Retaining Wall (25 ft long × 3 ft high)

Building a single-wythe decorative brick wall with modular bricks and 3/8" mortar joints.

Wall Dimensions:25 ft × 3 ft = 75 sq ft
Brick Dimensions:8" × 2.25" with 3/8" joint
Waste Factor:10%
Calculation Steps:
  1. Wall Area = 25 × 3 = 75 sq ft
  2. Modular brick rate ≈ 6.85 bricks/sq ft
  3. Raw bricks = 75 × 6.85 = 514 bricks
  4. With 10% waste = 514 × 1.10 = 565 bricks
Order 570 bricks (often sold on cubes/pallets of 500).

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter wall length and height in feet or meters.
  2. Enter brick dimensions (standard modular is 7-5/8" × 2-1/4").
  3. Enter mortar joint thickness (standard is 3/8" or 0.375").
  4. Set waste percentage (5% to 10%).

Common Estimation Mistakes to Avoid

  • Neglecting mortar joint thickness (which would overestimate bricks by ~20%).
  • Forgetting that double-wythe structural brick walls require twice as many bricks.
